The citadel

Several centuries of Franco-Spanish fights

The Palace of the kings of Majorca was closed up in a succession of  more and more restricting fortifications. First by Louis XI, very few remains are left of that period. Then by Charles Quint,as it was attested by a sword stuck into the head of the eastern bastion .As for the fortifications built by Philipp II of Spain, they were well ahead of his time.Their six bastions, formerly circled by glacis, tower the city. Vauban and then the 19th century  modernized them. The outside defensive works built by Vauban were razed to the ground in the 20th century.
