The Third Order Chapel
A « decadaire » revolutionary temple
The third order chapel in the Dominican convent was completed in1774. It is a rare example of Louis XVI architecture in Roussillon. We can see three levels of painted decor on top of each other: to the initial religious theme by the painter Jacques Gamelin succeeded under the Directoire the revolutionary iconography of a « decadaire » temple, unique in France, with the goddess Minerve enthroned in the centre of the choir. The decor was again modified by the Army occupying the place during the July Monarchy. Changed into a garrison chapel, the building was retroceded to the city at the end of the 20th century.
