The powder magazine and the royal military academy

Perpignan contested between France and Spain from the 15th century to the 17th century, was a military town.To your right, erected under Vauban, remains only one of the numerous powder magazines intended to supply the artillery of the fortified town.To your left,there is the Royal Military Academy, founded in 1751 in order to train the young noblemen of the province to soldiering. Built in the premisses of an old cannon foundry, it included an inside ring and an outside one located in front of the walls. Suppressed in1789, transformed into the Academy Barracks in 1810 then Galliéni Barracks in 1921, it was retroceded to the city in 1966.
